Senior officials in Iran told the New York Times on Wednesday morning that Tehran’s top leadership was “in utter shock,” by the dramatic assassination of Haniyeh.
According to the officials, this assassination also questions Iran’s security reputation and its ability to protect its borders against such attacks.
Wary of staying in public places and becoming a target, Haniyeh had avoided Tehran’s hotels, staying instead at “a special residence” for war veterans in north Tehran. Islamic Jihad leader Ziad Al-Nakhala was staying in the same building on a different floor. Nakhala was unharmed in the assassination.
NourNews, an outlet affiliated with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Haniyeh’s residence was hit by an airborne projectile, apparently a guided missile. The news outlet termed the assassination “a dangerous gamble to undermine Tehran’s deterrence”, it said.
There was no immediate comment from Israel. The Israeli military said it was conducting a situational assessment but had not issued any new security guidelines for civilians, although it has moved non-combatant soldiers out of bases within 40 km of the northern border.
Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, vowed on Wednesday to make Israel regret its alleged assassination of Hamas terror group leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, while its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised a “harsh punishment” for the killing.
“Iran is mourning the martyrdom of the brave leader of the Palestinian Resistance Ismail Haniyeh,” Pezeshkian wrote on his official account on X. “Yesterday I raised his victorious hand and today I have to carry his coffin on my shoulders.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will defend its territorial integrity and honor and would make the terrorist occupiers regret their cowardly action,” Pezeshkian continued, referring to Israel.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, “With this action, the criminal and terrorist Zionist regime prepared the ground for harsh punishment for itself, and we consider it our duty to seek revenge for his blood as he was martyred in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” in a statement carried by official news agency IRNA.
I’m building a new set of Judaica collectibles for release Purim 2025. It will be called Haman and his 10 sons hanging. Shukr and Haniyah made the cut for the first 2 figurines. Pls hurry up with the other 9, our project is under a tight time table.
Now let’s hope and pray that those רשעים in Iran don’t find out who the Israeli spies in their country are.
Oooh Sinwaaaar, come out come out wherever you are …
BBC reporting “Hamas in shock” over the death of their leader in Teheran by ISRAEL. Nice.
Usually that means a few missiles in a empty field then they claim they win.
In other news, Iranians have been unable to locate any available dry cleaners as the entire vast govt personnel have all pooed in their pants.
The world should do to Iran what they have been doing to Israel the past few months, telling them not to hit back or escalate the situation..
The murderer in Teheran was directly responsible for many terrorist attacks against Jews in Israel and in other countries incl Cyprus, France and Turkey. The arch-terrorist zapped in Beirut was responsible for the deaths of over 200 US Marines when Reagan was president, and dozens of attacks on Israelis, incl the deaths of 12 Druze kids in HaGolan. Good work IDF, the only defenders of Israel.
Stop blamming Israel for your actions.Nobody is safe in Iran.
