Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani, who serves on the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, said on Saturday night in an interview with Iran Watch that “Iran’s aerial operations against Israel could last three to four days.”

Ardestani added that Iran “is certainly prepared for the consequences of such an attack and will be ready for any subsequent developments.”

His comments come as US President Joe Biden was asked on Saturday night what his message is to Iran, which has threatened to attack Israel in retaliation for the elimination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

“Don’t,” Biden replied to reporters who asked him the question as he was exiting a church in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Speculation has grown that Iran will not follow through on its threats of attacking Israel due to the risks of sparking a regional war and the likelihood its attack could fail, as its previous large-scale attack failed in April.

A statement released to Sky News late Friday by the Iranian mission to the United Nations in New York appeared to link the timing of a response to the Gaza ceasefire talks.

The statement said: “Our priority is to establish a lasting ceasefire in Gaza; any agreement accepted by Hamas will also be recognised by us. The Israeli regime has violated our national security and sovereignty through its recent act of terrorism.”

It continued: “We have the legitimate right to self-defence – a matter totally unrelated to the Gaza ceasefire. However, we hope that our response will be timed and conducted in a manner not to the detriment of the potential ceasefire.”

The subtext of the statement appeared to confirm that a retaliation would come at some point, but that any response before a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel could jeopardise a deal.

Leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar have jointly demanded that Israel and Hamas return to stalled talks on the war in Gaza this week, stating that “only the details” of carrying out a cease-fire and hostage release remain to be negotiated. “There is no further time to waste, nor excuses from any party for further delay,” they said in a joint statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Thursday, “Pursuant to the proposal by the U.S. and the mediators, Israel will — on 15 August — send the negotiations team to a place to be determined in order to finalize the details of the implementation of the framework agreement.”

it’s equally important to understand what ISN’T deterring the mullahs. biden’s one-syllable answer certainly isn’t. and america’s military is poised to do nothing useful: the uss roosevelt is sailing AWAY from the conflict zone, while the uss wasp prepares to evacuate american civilians. and it’s arguable what the americans intend to do with a dozen f-22 fighters, which aren’t really needed to ensure israel’s air superiority against iran’s fleet of vintage relics, or for hunting down drones. deploying a squadron of b-52s, or even kc-135s would have been more convincing.
