House Oversight Committee Subpoenas DHS Secretary for Records on Governor Walz’s Alleged CCP Connections

WASHINGTON – The Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, James Comer (R-Ky.), on Monday, has issued a subpoena to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, demanding intelligence reports and communications related to Minnesota Governor Timothy Walz’s alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The move follows whistleblower disclosures that revealed concerns within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding the governor’s connections to the CCP.

According to Chairman Comer, whistleblower information pointed to a Microsoft Teams group chat among DHS employees, containing non-classified information about Governor Walz’s alleged connections. The group chat, labeled “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync,” along with other intelligence reports, has become a focal point for the Committee’s investigation.

“The Committee has been made aware of ongoing concerns among DHS staff about a long-standing relationship between the CCP and Governor Walz,” Chairman Comer stated. He added that both classified and unclassified documents in DHS’s possession contain relevant information about the investigation.

The Oversight Committee’s ongoing probe seeks to understand how federal agencies are addressing potential CCP influence within U.S. governance, particularly targeting subnational leaders such as state governors. In August, Comer initiated an inquiry into Governor Walz following reports of his alleged connections to CCP officials and entities.

Chairman Comer emphasized that the investigation predates Walz’s selection as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. He stated that if the allegations were true, it would indicate significant vulnerabilities in the U.S. government’s ability to counter CCP influence.

The subpoena requests DHS produce unredacted records, including all relevant documents and communications from the Microsoft Teams chat and related intelligence reports concerning Governor Walz, from July 2024 to the present.
