NORTH CAROLINA – A devastating photo has surfaced showing North Carolina grandparents stranded on the roof of their home as floodwaters from Hurricane Helene surrounded them. Their granddaughter, Jessica Drye Turner, who was in Texas, pleaded for someone to rescue her family in Asheville, as they watched vehicles being swept away. Despite their calls for help, the roof collapsed before rescuers arrived, and her parents and 7-year-old nephew, Micah, tragically drowned.

Turner shared her anguish on social media, recounting how her sister Megan, who had taken the photo, was trapped alongside their elderly parents and nephew. Megan survived after becoming wedged in debris and was rescued an hour later. However, the rest of the family was swept away by the floodwaters.
Hurricane Helene has claimed at least 133 lives, with 40 deaths in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where Asheville is located. Turner expressed her grief on Facebook, asking for prayers and support for her family as they navigated the heartbreak.
Turner’s 7-year-old nephew, Micah, was later found a quarter-mile from where Megan had been rescued. Turner reflected on the profound loss but remained hopeful that their deaths would lead others to faith. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Megan after the tragic loss of her son.
Hurricane Helene caused widespread devastation across multiple states, including Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia, leaving many dead and countless communities isolated. As floodwaters recede, officials expect the death toll to rise. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper described the catastrophic situation, noting that some communities have been completely destroyed. Search and rescue operations continue across the hardest-hit areas.
