JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Slabodka Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, a member of Degel Hatorah’s Council of Torah Leaders, made a surprising remark during a meeting this weekend, stressing that youths who are not studying in yeshiva should enlist in the IDF.

Rabbi Hirsch was speaking with philanthropist and businessman David Hager from Los Angeles, one of the biggest supporters of the Netzah Yehuda association which directs the Nahal Charedi battalion. Mr. Hager arrived in Israel last week for a fundraiser for the fund supporting the yeshiva world after the Israeli high court slashed government funding to yeshivos.
Rabbi Hirsch spoke with Mr. Hager at length about the various existing charedi units as well as various topics and questions which have arisen regarding military service. Hager related that at the end of the conversation, Rabbi Hirsch agreed that youths who are not studying at all in yeshiva, either those that are working or studying in academia, could be conscripted. However those that are studying, even if they cannot study the entire day, should not be enlisting in the IDF.
In the wake of Rabbi Hirsch’s statement, which took all of those present by surprise, Mr. Hager agreed to donate 5 million NIS to the fund supporting the yeshivos.
The other Rabbonim said exactly the opposite, ‘They wish that every Jewish boy in Eretz Yisroel should go learn in Yeshiva and Nobody should join the Israeli army’.
Any one that has his own children and grand children that might be forced to join in the war efforts, should not voice any opinion, because they have a very strong Negiuous.
34% of the IDF incl 25% of officers are women. Maybe charedi not in yeshiva should join.
