WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-In recent remarks, Senator JD Vance (R-OH) emphasized the importance of defending American values, particularly free speech, when engaging with NATO allies. He expressed concern over instances where Americans, such as tech billionaire Elon Musk, face criticism or threats from European nations for exercising their right to free expression.

Vance posed a direct challenge to NATO, urging the U.S. to hold its allies accountable for upholding the principles of free speech. “If NATO wants us to continue supporting them, and NATO wants us to continue to be a good participant in this military alliance, why don’t you respect American values and respect free speech?” Vance asked.

The senator argued that continued U.S. support for NATO should come with conditions, especially regarding the protection of fundamental rights like free speech. “It’s insane that we would support a military alliance if that military alliance isn’t gonna be pro-free speech,” he said, emphasizing the moral obligations the U.S. should enforce on its allies.

Vance stressed that American power should not come without expectations. He called for the U.S. to make it clear that “American power comes with certain strings attached,” and among these conditions is the respect for free speech, particularly from European partners.

Vance believes that European countries, as close allies, should naturally align with American values, especially when it comes to fundamental freedoms. “European countries should theoretically share American values, especially about some very basic things like free speech,” he concluded.
