Hochstein Stresses: No Party Can Hold Weapons In Lebanon Besides The State

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Amid concerns over the collapse of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the pro-Saudi newspaper A-sharq Al-Awsat reports, citing sources from the Lebanese Parliament, that the U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein stated in a meeting with them: “The deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon will take place, and Israel will withdraw to the Blue Line by the end of the ceasefire period on January 27.”

According to the report, Hochstein emphasized: “The meaning of the agreement is that the only party allowed to hold weapons in Lebanon will be the state, and it will be forbidden for political parties and militias in Lebanon to hold weapons.” Hochstein clarified that the agreement will cover all of Lebanon, without exception, and that any ambiguity in the interpretation of the agreement’s clauses, which might suggest that the terms apply only to areas south of the Litani River and not to those north of it, is misplaced and contradicts what is written in the agreement. He further clarified that Hezbollah’s weapons, military facilities, and tunnels must be under the control of the Lebanese army, and it is preferable to get rid of them, stressing that they will be destroyed.

Hochstein’s comments come amid threats from Hezbollah’s Deputy Head of the Political Council, Mahmoud Qamati, who threatened to cancel the ceasefire agreement with Israel. He declared on Monday that: “We gave the new mechanism and international law a 60-day opportunity to protect Lebanon, and we committed to patience for 60 days, but day 61 will be very different.”

According to the Lebanese security sources cited in Al-Joumhouria newspaper, there have been over 1,000 violations of the ceasefire by the IDF since the ceasefire went into effect about a month ago.

Meanwhile, according to a report on Lebanese TV channel MTV, Hochstein is expected to present a very different and significant proposal: extending the ceasefire agreement and the Israeli withdrawal for another 60 days. This is due to the Lebanese army’s inability to deploy 10,000 troops in southern Lebanon.
