NYC Politicians Exempt From $9 Congestion Toll, Sparking Criticism

NEW YORK – Several high-ranking New York City politicians, including Mayor Eric Adams, Comptroller Brad Lander, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, are exempt from the city’s new $9 congestion toll that took effect on January 5.

These officials, who are chauffeured around by NYPD security details, can pass through the congestion zone south of 60th Street without paying, while regular New Yorkers and even uniformed officers working in the area must pay.

Critics, including Susan Lee from New Yorkers Against Congestion Pricing Tax, have called the exemptions hypocritical, accusing these officials of supporting a toll that they don’t personally bear. Opponents like Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and Councilman Robert Holden have blasted the move as a double standard, urging politicians to lead by example and pay the toll themselves.

Despite the backlash, the MTA maintains that law enforcement vehicles, including those used for security details, are exempt under their emergency vehicle policy. The new toll is intended to reduce traffic congestion and generate revenue for the city’s struggling transit system. However, it has sparked criticism from residents, businesses, and unions who fear it will burden working-class New Yorkers and slow emergency response times.

Feels like Covid all over again. The politicians set the rules, force citizens to comply, while they themselves basically do as they please.

Unless a person works there or R’l has to go there for medical treatment, people should not go. It’s a disgusting lawless place. I use to love to going to the city. During the nineties and early two thousands it was a pleasure to go on the subway, read a book or chap a snooze, and get out and walk around in the city. Then came Vilhelm DeBlasio ym’s. At first, there were homeless people stinking up random subway cars and you would have to find one that didn’t stink. But then it started becoming dangerous and if I wanted to go to the city I would drive. Then the streets became more dangerous too. And now, you have to pay for the privilege to drive into the farshtinkin city. No thank you. There’s amazing restaurants and shopping near every frum community in this area and I could enjoy views of the skyline from Brooklyn or New Jersey.

DeBlasio said the same thing when questioned why he used a climate change has guzzling suburban and running red lights. He basically said, he’s more important than the average taxpaying peasant.

Hold on .. they say it’s because emergency vehicles are exempt? We know that Hatzalah has to pay. That’s more emergency than chauffeuring Eric Adams.

Corruption in NYC will never end. Between property tax and city income tax, city employees over 330,000 always find a way to get money out of hard working taxpayers. They are the biggest welfare overhead for the people of the city.

It should be applied across the board to everyone – except for emergency call from the Police & ambulances & fire department.

    Ahh…more clickbait.
It’s not “politicians” as a group that are exempt but those with security details.
