BROOKLYN – A 53-year-old Brooklyn man, Michael Shelonchik, tragically died following a violent robbery aboard an Uber ride on Tuesday evening. The attack occurred around 6:15 p.m. at W. 5th St. and Neptune Ave. in Coney Island. Shelonchik was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle when two men opened the door, beat him, and stole his chain. After the robbery, the driver sped off, but when they reached E. 3rd St. and Avenue Y in Gravesend, about a mile away, the driver realized that Shelonchik had become unconscious.

The driver immediately called for help, and medics rushed Shelonchik to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet apprehended the suspects, who are being sought in connection with the robbery and assault.

Police have classified the case as a homicide, pending an autopsy from the city Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death. Shelonchik, a resident of Bergen Beach, was reportedly attacked during an ordinary Uber ride, but the tragic turn of events has left the community in shock. Investigators are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Don’t these Uber taxis, as well as other taxis, lock all doors, especially at night?

Sounds like the Iber driver was in on it. Left doors open told the people where he is going to be. He will be in big trouble when they check his phone records.

I believe many cars lock automatically when the car reaches a certain speed which raises the question if the driver was an accomplice?

Why wouldn’t the driver start moving if guys leaning into his car were assaulting the passenger?

Why didn’t they go to Coney Island Hospital when it was right there instead of Maimonides hospital so far away it may have saved his life???

The drivers story doesn’t make sense. I know exactly where this street is in Coney Island, so he drives all the way to Gravesend before the driver realizes the guy isn’t moving. Sorry i’m not buying your story.
