Orthodox Jewish Midwife Joins Ohio Hospital to Serve Religious Community

CLEVELAND – A hospital in Ohio has recently added an Orthodox Jewish certified nurse midwife to its staff to better accommodate the growing Orthodox Jewish community in the area. The move aims to provide more culturally sensitive care to patients with specific religious needs, particularly when it comes to women’s health and childbirth.

UH Ahuja Medical Center, located in Beachwood, Ohio, has welcomed Shana Goldstein-Ptahia, the only Orthodox Jewish midwife in the region. Goldstein-Ptahia’s expertise includes navigating Jewish laws and customs, which can be crucial when caring for Orthodox Jewish patients who may face unique healthcare considerations.

“The health care team doesn’t always understand the behaviors in play and it’s nice when I can help almost ‘translate’ what’s happening at the bedside and alleviate some of the miscommunication,” she said. “Dad’s not holding her hand – not because he’s not supporting her. He just can’t hold her hand right now. Or, ‘Is he standing behind the curtain because he’s not interested in the delivery?’ No, his custom is to not look at the delivery itself, etc.”

Raised in Akron, Goldstein-Ptahia’s interest in midwifery grew after a personal experience at a different hospital where her religious practices were not adequately respected. She now specializes in natural childbirth techniques, such as “spinning babies,” and is dedicated to ensuring that patients receive care that aligns with their cultural and religious values.

Goldstein-Ptahia, who lives in Beachwood with her husband and three children, is also an active member of local synagogues. Her addition to the staff at UH Ahuja Medical Center reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing culturally competent care for patients from diverse backgrounds.

I agree. This story is great for that local community but not newsworthy for the rest of us.

Nit for nothing but I wouldn’t want a Jewish women in the room helping deliver my baby. They should educate the hospital/Dr’s of halachos.
