WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would temporarily halt the implementation of planned U.S. tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico for at least 30 days. The decision follows agreements made by both countries to take stronger actions to combat the trafficking of fentanyl into the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the pause in a tweet, stating that Canada had made new commitments, including appointing a “Fentanyl Czar” to address the issue. The Canadian government had been facing the prospect of retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion in U.S. goods, but this new step has averted those measures—for now.

Trudeau added that he had a “good call” with President Trump, during which the two leaders discussed a collaborative approach to prevent fentanyl from crossing the border. As a result, the proposed tariffs would be suspended for at least 30 days as the two countries work to finalize a broader economic deal.

In a follow-up post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted that Canada had agreed to secure the Northern Border and tackle the deadly fentanyl crisis, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans. Trump expressed optimism about the pause and emphasized the importance of fairness in trade.

Earlier on Monday, Trump also paused tariffs on Mexico following an agreement with President Claudia Sheinbaum, who promised to deploy 10,000 soldiers to Mexico’s northern border to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. According to U.S. authorities, the majority of fentanyl seizures at the border come from Mexico, with over 21,100 pounds intercepted in 2024 compared to only about 43 pounds at the Canadian border.

The temporary tariff suspensions come as the U.S. government seeks greater international cooperation to address the fentanyl epidemic, which has devastated communities across the country.
