WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) has defended the U.S. government’s decision to spend $20 million on the production of Sesame Street in Iraq, emphasizing the critical role the program plays in promoting public health and countering extremism among Iraqi children.

“This isn’t just funding a kids’ show,” Coons stated. “Millions of children in countries like Iraq benefit from this program. It’s a show that helps teach values, helps teach public health, helps prevent kids from dying from dysentery and disease.”
The senator pointed out that Sesame Street is more than an educational program—it plays an important role in shaping peaceful behaviors and promoting cooperation in a society grappling with violence and instability. Coons argued that programs like Sesame Street provide an alternative to extremist messaging, particularly in areas where groups like ISIS have previously gained influence.
“This show teaches values like collaboration, peacefulness, and cooperation in a society where the alternative is ISIS extremism and terrorism,” he said.
Considering what Sesame Street has turned into in the United States, I wouldn’t give a penny to it, anywhere!
It’s not the same show I watched in my pure unadulterated innocence back in the early ’70s.
I know, I know, some of you are going to say that two of the same characters are in the same position now that they were 50 plus years ago and you’re probably correct. The thing is back then it wasn’t even if anyone’s mind.
