Trader Joe’s Keeps Egg Prices Low Amid Surge

NEW YORK – While egg prices continue to climb across the country, Trader Joe’s has managed to keep prices relatively affordable. As of the week of February 11, eggs at Trader Joe’s were priced at $3.49 per dozen, well below the national average of $4.95 for Grade A large eggs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In some areas, prices have even topped $10 per dozen due to an ongoing shortage caused by a nationwide bird flu outbreak.

Despite the surge, Trader Joe’s has kept their egg prices much lower than the competition. One of the key reasons for this is their purchasing strategy. The grocery chain buys directly from suppliers, which helps to cut out middlemen and reduce price markups. Additionally, Trader Joe’s operates with a smaller product selection, allowing them to streamline their inventory and better control costs. Their use of private-label brands, which don’t come with the premium prices of national brands, also plays a major role in keeping prices in check.

To manage the ongoing egg shortage, Trader Joe’s has implemented a one-dozen egg limit per customer to avoid hoarding and ensure that more shoppers have access to the product. This measure has become increasingly common at other grocery stores like Costco, which has also placed purchase limits due to high demand.

“We only change our prices when our costs change,” said Nakia Rohde, a spokesperson for Trader Joe’s, explaining the company’s commitment to providing value for its customers. While the egg shortage has driven prices up at many other stores, Trader Joe’s focus on low-cost sourcing and limiting overhead has allowed them to maintain competitive pricing.

This isn’t the first time the grocery chain has been praised for offering good value despite market challenges. Their strategy of limiting product variety and focusing on private-label items has long been part of their business model, and it appears to be paying off even in the face of rising egg prices.

The egg crisis is also affecting other industries, such as restaurants. However, Trader Joe’s customers are still able to find eggs at a price much lower than the national average, making it one of the most affordable options in a tough market.

RFK is trying now to do something by replacing the Biden’s USDA process of culling all the chickens (140mil. so far last year alone) when one test positive with other metrics and smarter perimeter tech (for invasive geese carriers) to farmers.
