NEW YORK – New York City will shut down the Roosevelt Hotel migrant shelter in the coming months as fewer asylum seekers arrive, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday. The Midtown Manhattan hotel, which has served as both an intake center and emergency shelter, is expected to stop operations by June.

Adams described the closure as a significant step in the city’s efforts to manage the migrant crisis, which has brought more than 232,000 people to New York since 2022. He attributed the decline in new arrivals to local policies and federal border measures.
At its peak, the Roosevelt processed thousands of migrants weekly, but that number has now dropped to around 350. City shelters, which housed nearly 69,000 migrants in early 2024, now accommodate fewer than 45,000. Officials have closed multiple emergency sites, with a total of 53 shelters—including large tent facilities—set to shut down by summer.
The Roosevelt Hotel’s time as a shelter has been marked by overcrowding, safety concerns, and logistical challenges, including complaints about illegal electric bikes congesting nearby streets.
The announcement follows a legal dispute between the city and the federal government over the withdrawal of $80.5 million in migrant aid. Speculation has swirled about whether Adams coordinated with the Trump administration on immigration enforcement in exchange for leniency in his ongoing legal case—an allegation both the mayor and federal officials deny.
