JERUSALEM (VINnews) — “The developments in southern Syria are fascinating,” Yisrael Hayom’s political affairs reporter Ariel Kahane writes. “De facto, a protectorate zone has been created under Israeli civilian and security influence.

In practice, this essentially means an expansion of Israeli territory, the disappearance of the Israeli-Syrian border outlined in the 1974 armistice agreements—all without officially declaring it. Following Netanyahu’s remarks earlier this week, Israel is unilaterally enforcing the demilitarization of southern Syria.
The IDF spokesperson announce Tuesday that “the IDF attacked military targets in the southern Syria region in recent hours, including command centers and sites containing weapons. The presence of military forces and equipment in southern Syria poses a threat to Israeli citizens. The IDF will continue to act to remove any threat to the citizens of Israel.”
Defense Minister Israel Katz added on Monday night that, “The Air Force is currently striking with full force in southern Syria as part of the new policy we have defined—demilitarizing southern Syria. The message is clear: we will not allow southern Syria to become another southern Lebanon.”
Earlier this week, Kahane reported that the head of COGAT (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories) , Major General Ghassan Alian, who himself is Druze, met with village leaders in southern Syria. Additionally, residents of these villages will begin working in Israel. The Druze have also set up their own militias which are coordinating with Israel to patrol and protect the Southern Syria region, where nearly 300,000 Druze live.
In other words, a protectorate has emerged in the region which is under Israel’s security and civilian influence. Israel is establishing a demilitarized zone in southern Syria to prevent the rise of jihadist organizations that could act against it.
But no less concerning are the pro-Turkish militias or even authentic Turkish forces establishing a presence in the area. Therefore, Israel is taking preemptive action. In essence, it must be understood that Israel’s borders are changing, and it seems that this will remain the case until further notice.

Thanks. Previously I had thought of the term ‘Protectorate’ as exclusive to the Empire in Star Wars.
