During the ceremony, DeSantis awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom to 95 year old David Shaecter, a Holocaust survivor who settled in Miami in 1956. “He has called the city home for almost 70 years and has made a profound impact on our South Florida community,” DeSantis said, praising Shaecter’s decades of work in educating future generations about the Holocaust.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner, who is Jewish, also spoke at the event, emphasizing that “‘Never Again’ is ultimately a way of life for the Jewish people.” He highlighted the memorial’s role in ensuring the past is remembered to protect the future.

The ceremony underscored Florida’s dedication to preserving Holocaust history, supporting survivors, and combating antisemitism.
