The couple’s names have been cleared for publication: Or Chaim Hamdani Cohen (38) and his wife Esther (35), of blessed memory. Details regarding the funeral, which will take place today, will be announced separately. The couple are survived by their four children, one of whom heard the shots, found them dead and alerted police.

According to sources familiar with the family, they were a normative, well-regarded family belonging to the Sephardic community in the neighborhood. The husband regularly prayed at the local synagogue, and the wife worked in the Atarot industrial zone. She was also well known in the community for managing a central charity organization (Gemach) to support new mothers.

The couple’s children attend well-known educational institutions in the neighborhood. The tragedy has left the community in shock, including acquaintances from the boys’ Talmud Torah and the girls’ neighborhood school.

MDA paramedic Eden Marzayev and MDA emergency medical technician Omri David, who arrived at the scene, said:

“We were led into the apartment and saw a man and a woman unconscious, with no pulse and not breathing. We performed medical examinations and were forced to pronounce them dead at the scene.”

Shira, whose daughter studied with Esther, the murdered woman, said that “She was a righteous woman. She ran a clothing charity. Her daughter is in the same class as my daughter. She has a two-year-old baby, a child in kindergarten, and a daughter in third grade. From the outside, it seemed like her husband was disconnected from her—off in his own world, in his own head,”

Shira also participated in weekly Torah classes with the victim. “I would see her often at the Torah lessons. A classic charedi family. I ran a summer camp a year ago, and her daughter attended. The husband would bring them in the morning. Even in my darkest thoughts, I never imagined it could come to this.”

Despite what seemed like the outward appearance of a family dealing with ordinary challenges, Shira shares something that might shed light on the tragic incident.
“I understood that she opened a case at the Rabbinical Court a week ago—she wanted a divorce. In the neighborhood, we don’t know how to process this. What to think, how to feel.”

It is truly disgusting that Yehuda Dov, writer of this article, ended the piece with that ridiculous quote about the couple not having been a “classic charedi family.” Firstly, there is no such thing as a “classic charedi family.” Secondly, the author implies that because they were BT’s, well, what can one expect? Shame on the writer.

Gun owners in the US have an 8 times higher suicide rate than non gun owners. It’s better to avoid buying a gun for most people.

People on this site seem to be shocked that heinous acts occur in EY. This criminal act, and other have heinous crimes have occurred in the past, in both religious and non-religious communities, in Israel. For example, in the not too distant past, two drivers, one old and one young, got into a verbal altercation for a parking spot, at an outdoor mall, in a suburb of Tel Aviv. Their wives got involved, and this led to a shoving match. Finally, the older driver took out a concealed gun, and shot the younger driver dead. To this date, I don’t know if he was ever prosecuted, for a senseless killing over a parking spot. More recently, a husband and wife in Israel were leaving a hospital at night, where they both worked as health workers. All of a sudden, a bicyclist , came out of nowhere, and nearly ran the couple over. When the husband protested, the person on the bicycle came back, and stabbed the husband to death. Sadly, these random, violent, and heinous crimes occur in Israel, as they occur in the USA; these acts are not connected to terrorism, and are perpetrated by Jews against other Jews. One Israeli police official, who commented on the stabbing by the bicycle rider, stated that “we have become a very violent society”.

Unfortunately psychotropic drugs can cause violent behaviour, suicide and homicide.

Never own a gun, 25% of women killed, it’s their partner with a gun. 50% of suicides are with a gun from their own household.
Protect yourself and your family and get rid of all guns.
If you tell me you need a gun to protect yourself, my answer is you’re paranoid and should for sure not have a gun.

This is horrific and terrible. The man was clearly unstable and not healthy. It’s clear the divorce action pushed him over the edge into the extreme. In Israel, like the US, when a wife files for divorce it means the husband will likely never see his kids again unless the woman allows it. He will also be forced to pay her most of his income, and essentially become a full time slave with nothing left for himself. These laws can push people over the edge to do horrible things. I am not excusing it, just raising awareness that pushing crazy people into despair is a stupid policy. The laws need to be fixed and we need better ways to handle family disputes
