Authorities report that between 40 and 50 people were injured in the crash. At least 12 suffered serious injuries requiring urgent medical attention, and multiple passengers were airlifted from the scene. One person has been confirmed dead.

Emergency crews from across the region rushed to the site, working quickly to triage and transport victims. Boats, ambulances, and helicopters were seen swarming the area as first responders coordinated rescue efforts.

Local officials have launched an investigation into what caused the ferry to veer off course and strike the sandbar. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of families.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as passengers were thrown from their seats and scrambled for safety. “It happened so fast — there was a loud crunch and then screaming everywhere,” said one survivor.

The Memorial Causeway remains partially closed as authorities continue their work at the scene.

First responders in Clearwater, Florida, declared a “mass casualty incident” Sunday night after a recreational ferry carrying dozens of passengers was struck by a boat, which fled the scene.

The Clearwater Police Department said the Clearwater Ferry had more than 40 people onboard when it was struck by another boat near the Memorial Causeway Bridge.

The exact number of injuries is unclear, but police said all injuries came from passengers on the ferry. Two people were considered “seriously injured” and transported by helicopter to local hospitals.

As of 10:30 p.m. local time, first responders had removed all patients and passengers from the ferry.
