While PreCheck members have been exempt for years — and many regular checkpoints have inconsistently enforced the rule — this update now applies across all U.S. airports. The only exception is for travelers without a REAL ID, who may still face additional screening, including shoe removal.
The policy shift stems from enhanced scanning technology and a reassessment of threat levels, according to an internal TSA memo. Shoe removal was first implemented after the 2001 “shoe bomber” incident. With this change, the TSA hopes to streamline screening and improve the passenger experience
