JERUSALEM (VINnews)— Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement that the United Kingdom will recognize a Palestinian state unless Israel complies with a list of ceasefire-related demands ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in September.

In a strongly worded statement, Netanyahu accused Starmer of “rewarding Hamas’s monstrous terrorism” and warned that such policies embolden extremists and undermine regional and global security.
“Starmer rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism & punishes its victims,” Netanyahu said. “A jihadist state on Israel’s border TODAY will threaten Britain TOMORROW. Appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will fail you too. It will not happen.”
The comments come in response to Starmer’s weekend declaration that the UK would move to recognize a Palestinian state “as part of a pathway to peace,” a position that breaks from previous British policy and aligns more closely with the EU and some Arab governments.
Israeli officials have expressed outrage over the timing of the UK proposal, which they say sends the wrong message amid ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza aimed at dismantling Hamas’s infrastructure. The Netanyahu government maintains that granting statehood to the Palestinians before Hamas is defeated would be a strategic catastrophe.
A senior Israeli official said, on condition of anonymity, that Britain’s approach “risks legitimizing terrorism and rewarding mass murder,” adding that Israel will continue to resist “all forms of external pressure that would compromise its security.”
Starmer’s office has not responded to Netanyahu’s remarks. The Labour-led government has framed its recognition effort as a step toward a two-state solution, though critics say it effectively sidelines Israeli concerns during a time of national crisis.
Israel’s government has vowed to continue military operations until Hamas is completely neutralized, following the group’s October 7 massacre that left over 1,200 Israelis dead and hundreds kidnapped.
