LONDON (VINnews) — In a dramatic policy shift, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced Tuesday that the United Kingdom will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September—unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire and a slate of conditions critics say would reward Hamas aggression and undermine Israel’s right to self-defense.

Speaking from 10 Downing Street, Starmer said the UK would move forward with recognition unless Israel halts its military operations in Gaza, refrains from annexing any part of the Judea-Samaria, allows unfettered humanitarian aid into the Hamas-controlled enclave, and commits to a long-term two-state peace process. He also demanded the full release of hostages held by Hamas, though critics note the group’s history of broken ceasefires and terror tactics makes such expectations tenuous at best.
“The United Kingdom cannot stand by while the cycle of violence continues,” Starmer said. “If progress toward peace is not achieved, we will take action by recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state at the United Nations.”
Pro-Israel advocates condemned the announcement as deeply misguided, saying it would embolden Hamas and other Iranian-backed terror groups while punishing Israel for defending its citizens.
“This sends the wrong message to the region,” said Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy. “Rewarding the Palestinians with statehood recognition—without insisting they abandon terrorism or acknowledge Israel’s right to exist—is a blow to any honest peace effort.”
Starmer’s move comes amid growing pressure from Labour’s left wing and several European governments, including Spain and Ireland, which have recently recognized Palestinian State. But the decision marks a sharp break from long-standing UK policy, which has traditionally linked recognition to the outcome of direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
Opposition leader Nigel Farage blasted the move as “a betrayal of Britain’s ally and a dangerous precedent.”
