“Look at the NIH… they had just funded a lab that brewed up a virus that KLLED 20 million people worldwide!*” Makary declared bluntly, referring to the now widely scrutinized relationship between the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

The statement, delivered with unmistakable gravity, underscores growing concerns that taxpayer-funded U.S. agencies were directly or indirectly involved in research that may have unleashed a global pandemic.

Background: What Was Funded
?
For years, scientists and lawmakers have debated whether “gain-of-function” research — experiments that make viruses more transmissible or deadly — was being conducted in Wuhan with U.S. support. The EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based nonprofit, received millions in NIH grants and worked closely with the Wuhan lab, which many now believe to be the origin point of COVID-19.

Dr. Makary’s blunt statement didn’t just reignite the controversy — it supercharged it. His remarks suggest the time for cautious speculation is over and that accountability must follow.

A Growing Chorus

Makary’s comments echo those of other top officials, including members of Congress and former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield, who have publicly criticized NIH and Fauci-era funding decisions.

Even the Department of Energy and the FBI have now acknowledged that a lab leak is a likely origin of the virus — a theory once labeled as conspiracy but now gaining bipartisan acceptance.

So Why Is This Still Being Ignored?

Despite mounting evidence, many in the media and government continue to downplay or dismiss the lab-leak theory. Makary’s statement raises urgent questions:

Why has there been no full, independent investigation into NIH’s funding relationships?

Who approved the research grants and under what oversight?

How has the mainstream media failed to hold anyone accountable?

What Comes Next?
Makary’s statement may finally force the conversation into the open. With 20 million lives lost globally, millions more devastated by economic and social fallout, and trust in public health institutions hanging by a thread, the American public deserves answers — and accountability.
