CANADA – Montreal police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with an assault that occurred last Friday at Dickie Moore Park in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough. The victim, a 32-year-old Orthodox Jewish father, was at the park with his three children when the suspect approached and sprayed him with liquid from a water bottle. When the victim tried to confront the suspect, he was pushed to the ground, punched multiple times in the face, and kicked.

A video shared on X captured part of the violent attack, showing the man being repeatedly punched while his children stood nearby. The suspect fled the scene on foot shortly after the assault, but was located and taken into custody by the North Regional Investigation Section on Monday. Police confirmed the suspect is being questioned, though no charges have yet been filed. Authorities have not publicly identified the individual.
The police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant noted that the assault has not been officially classified as a hate crime, and the hate crime unit is not leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. Montreal police praised the public for their assistance in locating the suspect and stressed their commitment to fully investigating the incident.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from Montreal’s Jewish community and political leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, who called it “an appalling act of violence.” Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante and Quebec Premier François Legault also expressed sympathy for the victim and his family.
The case will be forwarded to the Crown prosecutor’s office for consideration of potential charges once the investigation concludes.
