NEW YORK – New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani supports a Democratic Socialists of America plan to halt enforcement of misdemeanor offenses, drawing criticism from opponents who say it would embolden criminals, New York Post reports.

The DSA platform labels policing and detention as “instruments of class war” and calls for ending the “criminalization of working-class survival.” Mamdani has argued police should focus only on “serious crimes,” leaving offenses like petty theft, minor assault, drug possession, and DUI deprioritized.
While Mamdani says he no longer backs defunding the NYPD, critics—including Republican rival Curtis Sliwa—warn the proposal could create “an EZ-Pass for criminals” and worsen public safety. State law limits a mayor’s power to change misdemeanor statutes, though enforcement priorities could be shifted.
