SNAP Cuts Take Effect, Small Grocers Face Strain While Walmart and Big Chains Benefit

NEW YORK – Changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) under the Trump administration’s tax law went into effect Monday, reducing benefits for millions of low-income Americans. Analysts estimate that roughly 2.4 million fewer people could receive SNAP in an average month, with families potentially losing between $72 and $231 per month.

The cuts are expected to hit small and independent grocers hardest. Stephanie Johnson of the National Grocers Association, which represents thousands of independent stores, said that low-margin retailers could face significant challenges, noting that some members rely heavily on SNAP sales. Katina Holliday, owner of Freshly’s Market in Mississippi, told CNBC that her store has seen a 35–45% drop in sales in recent months, forcing staffing reductions and a hiring freeze.

Large retailers may be less affected. Consumer data cited by CNBC shows Walmart captures the largest share of SNAP spending, followed by Kroger, Costco, Amazon, and Sam’s Club. Michael Baker, an analyst at D.A. Davidson & Co., told CNBC that discount grocers may benefit as shoppers “trade down to stretch their dollars,” with Walmart positioned to see increased traffic despite smaller per-transaction purchases.

Other grocery chains, like Giant Eagle, are attempting to offset the impact through promotions, mobile app discounts, and loyalty programs. Experts also warn that SNAP reductions may influence the nutritional quality of food purchased, as lower-income households prioritize cost over healthier options.

I work 40 plus hours a week and pay my taxes with each check. Without SNAP benefits, my family would have starved numerous times over. To the naysayers and ignorant people who think that we’re all just low-lifes, know that a large portion of Americans actually receive some type of government assistance.

Perhaps this will cause the heimishe stores to lower their prices since those who do not have food stamps have had to suffer with artificially inflated prices! I know from my many years of being a kosher consumer that those stores did not care how much they charged because many people got free food via SNAP—- you may not like my comments but they are the emes.

SNAP or food stamps is welfare for the frum supermarket owners. It seems they battle over which supermarket can be designed to the latest decor. There seems to be no price competition because virtually all the customers start their month with thousands of dollars on the magic card.

The problem with foodstamps is that it allows grocers to raise their prices knowing that the beneficiaries won’t stop shopping. You don’t feel the pinch of higher prices because it’s all for free. The rest of us who do pay for our food then cannot afford to shop. In my large Frum City, the cashier told me the 50% of his checkouts are with foodstamps, no wonder kosher food is so expensive!

Go spend a few minutes on social media watching the typical American woman show off her food stamp haul. Unloading bags of processed food and junk. Don’t see a single fruit or vegetable. And they’re all fat too.
I think the programs have long been abused. Should not be able to buy unhealthy foods and garbage can’t wait till they fix that. Also too many Americans prefer to work less and live off of programs. It shouldn’t make more sense to be poor than to work. But sadly benefits are so generous that financially you earn more staying home than getting a job sometimes. That has to be fixed. Otherwise everyone will keep abusing. If you are able to work, you should not be allowed to collect benefits and remain unemployed.

Working in a grocery store I see snap using all of card the 1st day. Buying $8 frozen pizza when it’s on sale next week for $5. They need to be smarter shoppers. Or split the funds. No one allowed days off from 1st-3rd to allow restock and cashier check out.

Snap should count as income for other programs . So say you have snap and apply for hud. If you get $1k a month your income is now higher by $1k. If that results in not being eligible for HUD so be it . Fair is fair . They look at all my income

The stores will just raise prices to make up for the food stamp revenue loss.
