Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership over the past two days has been defined by two extraordinary acts of courage that demonstrate the full spectrum of principled governance – the compassionate rescue of Elizabeth Tsurkov and the decisive elimination of Hamas’s leadership responsible for the October 7th massacre.

Act One: Compassion Above Politics

In a remarkable display of leadership that transcends political divides, Netanyahu orchestrated the complex prisoner exchange that secured the freedom of Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, working closely with President Trump’s administration to demonstrate his unwavering commitment to every Israeli citizen’s wellbeing.

The deal, facilitated through President Trump’s diplomatic channels and involving the release of eight prisoners including a Lebanese commander, six Hezbollah operatives, and an Iranian citizen, represents Netanyahu’s principled approach to hostage recovery. What makes this exchange particularly exemplary is Netanyahu’s willingness to secure Tsurkov’s release despite her association with Haaretz, a publication that has consistently called for his removal from office. This is precisely how leadership should function – placing the welfare of citizens above personal or political grievances.

Act Two: Justice and Accountability

Just one day later, Netanyahu’s second act of courage came with the decisive IDF strikes in Doha, Qatar, targeting the Hamas leadership council responsible for orchestrating the October 7th massacre. The operation, which reportedly eliminated senior figures including Khaled Mashal, Zaher Jabarin, and Nizar Awadallah, represents the fulfillment of Netanyahu’s promise that those responsible for the brutal murders, kidnappings, and rapes would face justice.

As the IDF stated: “For years, these members of the Hamas leadership have led the terrorist organization’s operations, are directly responsible for the brutal October 7th massacre, and have been orchestrating and managing the war against the State of Israel.”

Leadership in Full Spectrum

These twin actions within 48 hours showcase Netanyahu’s complete approach to leadership – the mercy to save even political opponents and the resolve to pursue justice against those who commit atrocities against innocent civilians. The coordination with the Trump administration on both operations demonstrates how principled leaders can work together across political differences when fundamental human values are at stake.

Through diplomatic negotiation, Netanyahu secured Tsurkov’s freedom after 903 days in captivity. Through military precision, he ensured that the architects of October 7th could no longer plan future massacres from their safe havens abroad. Both decisions required courage, moral clarity, and the willingness to act decisively when lives hung in the balance.

This is how leadership should function – with compassion for the innocent and unwavering determination to hold terrorists accountable for their crimes against humanity.

I believe it was Aristotle who discussed the fine line between courage and being foolhardy and unwise. There may be ramifications of attacking a US ally. Already one is emerging – some say the US felt forced to warn Qatar in advance, to protect the alliance, and Qatar then warned Hamas giving the above-noted leaders time to escape. I hope that is not true; however, if correct it suggests that Natanyahu is not as smart at the op-ed suggests. There are ramifications to every action Israel takes that the US has to consider given how much money and weaponry it supplies Israel (and therefore is blamed for Israels actions). Its easy to say Trump betrayed Israel but he may say Israel betrayed its biggest ally… will take time to figure out how brilliant and courageous (versus foolhardy) the Doha mission was
