JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Israel’s high-powered laser interception system, known as the “Iron Beam,” has been declared operational after completing development and a final series of tests, the Defense Ministry and defense contractor Rafael announced. The system is expected to be delivered to the IDF by the end of the year.

The Defense Ministry said its Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D), the Israeli Air Force, and Rafael “successfully completed an advanced series of operational tests, which lasted several weeks, to demonstrate the capabilities of the high-power laser system.”
The trials, conducted in southern Israel, included the interception of rockets, mortars, and drones, marking the conclusion of the development phase and paving the way for deployment to operational units.
In a symbolic gesture, the ministry also announced that the system’s Hebrew name has been changed from Magen Or (Light Shield) to Or Eitan (Eitan’s Light), in memory of Cpt. Eitan Oster, 22, a commander in the IDF’s Egoz Commando Unit who was killed fighting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon in October 2024. Oster’s father, an engineer with DDR&D, was one of the developers of the Iron Beam project.
The Iron Beam is designed to work alongside Israel’s multilayered missile defense systems, including the Iron Dome, by using directed-energy technology to destroy short-range threats at a fraction of the cost of traditional interceptors.
