ALBANY, N.Y. — New York residents will soon find some relief in their mailboxes. Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday that the state has begun mailing out its first-ever “inflation refund” checks worth up to $400 to 8.2 million households.

The checks, which do not require any application or sign-up, are being sent directly to eligible taxpayers starting today, with deliveries continuing through October and November.
Eligibility is based on 2023 income tax filings. Joint filers earning up to $150,000 will receive $400, while those earning up to $300,000 will receive $300. Single filers earning up to $75,000 qualify for $200, and those up to $150,000 will receive $150. There are no age restrictions, and anyone meeting the criteria will automatically receive a check.
Governor Hochul framed the refunds as part of her broader effort to ease financial pressure on families facing high living costs. Earlier this year, she also delivered middle-class tax cuts, expanded the state child tax credit to up to $1,000 per child, and secured universal free school meals.
“Starting today, we’re sending inflation refund checks to over 8 million New Yorkers because it’s simple — this is your money and we’re putting it back in your pockets,” Hochul said. “I’ll never stop fighting to help your family address the rising cost of living.”
The state is funding the program in part with higher-than-expected sales tax revenue generated by inflation. Officials say the refund checks are designed to give households a cushion for unexpected expenses.
