New York City – Mayor Eric Adams on Monday shared a stark video on his X account showing images of Nigerian Christians slaughtered in ongoing attacks, demanding to know why the world has stayed largely silent.

“Where are all the voices that claim to care about ending genocide? In Nigeria, Christians are being slaughtered, a genocide is unfolding, and the silence is deafening,” Adams wrote. His post linked to a Fox News report on Bill Maher’s remarks that the violence is ignored “because the Jews aren’t involved.”

The scale of the bloodshed in Nigeria has alarmed human rights groups. Intersociety, a leading watchdog, estimates more than 7,000 Christians were killed in the first 220 days of 2025. Villages across the Middle Belt have been torched, with entire communities displaced. In June, gunmen massacred at least 218 people in Benue State and drove out more than 6,000 residents. That same month, the Yelwata massacre left between 100 and 200 dead, with thousands forced from their homes.
International outlets have documented charred bodies and mass graves across central Nigeria, where radical Fulani militias, Boko Haram, and Islamic State affiliates have carried out attacks on Christian towns. Thousands of churches are reported destroyed each year, and clergy have increasingly become targets. Earlier this month, Father Mathew Eya was gunned down in Enugu State; police later detained dozens of suspects.
Despite the scale of the killings, critics say both the Nigerian government and the international community have failed to mount a serious response. Local security forces are often accused of arriving hours late to scenes of carnage or turning a blind eye altogether. Lawmakers in the U.S. and Europe have begun raising alarms, warning of a slow-moving genocide.
Adams’ intervention stands out among U.S. politicians, who rarely spotlight the crisis. By posting a video of the atrocities, the mayor amplified a message long voiced by rights groups: Nigeria’s Christians are enduring one of the deadliest waves of religious persecution in the world today — and the world has yet to respond with urgency.
