RFK Jr. Pushes Debunked Link Between Autism and Circumcision

    31

WASHINGTON – US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., alongside President Donald Trump, on Thursday promoted a controversial and widely discredited claim suggesting that circumcision and related pain medication may increase the risk of autism in children. During a Cabinet meeting, Trump warned against taking Tylenol during pregnancy and after birth, while Kennedy claimed studies indicate circumcised children are twice as likely to develop autism, attributing the effect to the use of pain relief during the procedure.

Experts quickly rejected the assertions. Helen Tager-Flusberg, a Boston University autism specialist, noted that no rigorous studies have demonstrated a causal relationship between acetaminophen (Tylenol) and autism once confounding factors are properly considered. Similarly, the most frequently cited paper supporting the circumcision link, a 2015 Danish study, has been widely criticized for methodological flaws. The study focused on a small sample of Muslim boys circumcised in hospitals rather than at home, meaning the participants may have had other medical conditions affecting neurodevelopment. Later reviews have found no evidence connecting circumcision to adverse psychological or developmental outcomes.

Kennedy, a former environmental activist and attorney, has a long history of promoting controversial theories about autism, including links to vaccines, despite extensive research disproving any connection. His focus on uncovering alleged causes of autism has drawn criticism for diverting attention and funding from mainstream medical research. He has also employed figures such as David Geier, a discredited researcher previously disciplined for practicing medicine without a license, to continue exploring unproven autism claims.

Medical authorities emphasize that acetaminophen is generally considered safe in pregnancy and for infants when used as directed, contrary to Kennedy and Trump’s warnings. Experts warn that spreading unverified theories can mislead parents and detract from evidence-based approaches to understanding and treating autism.

Pat attention to what he said. He’s just sharing information. Relax.
Just because you don’t like what he said doesn’t make him crazy. He’s not making stuff up. He basically said that babies that are given Tylenol are more likely to have autism.
