WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump, speaking during commentary on the government shutdown, claimed he offered to “give back” Rep. Ilhan Omar to the President of Somalia, but the Somali leader declined, saying he “didn’t want anything to do with her.”

Trump made the remarks while criticizing congressional Democrats, including House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Omar, a Somali-born congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th District, immigrated to the United States as a child after fleeing civil war in Somalia. She has become a prominent progressive voice in Congress, focusing on issues including immigration, social justice, and foreign policy.
Omar has frequently been a target of Trump’s public statements. Despite the controversy, she has continued to advocate for her constituents and maintain her position as one of the first Muslim women elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
