MAINE – Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is standing by Maine Democratic Senate hopeful Graham Platner, who recently came under fire for a chest tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. Sanders emphasized that there are “one or two more important issues” than the tattoo and highlighted Platner’s military service and struggles with PTSD.

Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, revealed he got the tattoo in 2007 and did not realize its Nazi association. He has since replaced it with a Celtic-inspired design and apologized, stressing his lifelong opposition to fascism, racism, and antisemitism.

Progressive allies, including Pod Save America co-founder Jon Lovett, defended Platner, noting his consistent record on anti-racism. Platner argued the tattoo controversy distracts from key policy issues such as Medicare for All and wealth taxes.

Despite the backlash, Platner remains in the race and continues to lead former Maine Governor Janet Mills in Democratic primary polls.
