Where Is the Shomer? Chuck Schumer’s Deafening Silence

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 16: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, speaks during a news conference with Democratic Senators (not pictured) Patty Murray from Washington, Richard Durbin from Illinois, and Debbie Stabenow from Michigan at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. President Biden's next big economic package helped set off a heated debate among Republicans over whether to participate in the return of lawmakers' dedicated-spending projects, known as earmarks, a tussle that could be key to its success. Senator Schumer, what happened to you?

We still remember that night at the Agudah Dinner when you stood before us, your voice swelling with pride as you proclaimed yourself the “Shomer”—the guardian. “Schumer comes from Shomer Yisroel,” you declared, that clever wordplay bringing knowing smiles to a thousand faces. We believed you then. We needed to believe you.

The Jewish community of New York—your people, Senator—needs that guardian now more than ever. Yet at this critical hour, when darkness gathers at our doorstep, you have vanished into the shadows of political calculation.

The Enemy at the Gate

While you remain silent, Zohran Mamdani stands at the threshold of power in New York City. This is not hyperbole. This very radical assemblyman, who refuses to call Hamas the terrorist organization it is, who transforms the October 7th massacre into “resistance,” who wraps the blood of our murdered children in the language of liberation—this man could be our next mayor.

Let that sink in: The mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population outside Israel could be someone who calls Israel’s fight for survival a “war of occupation.” Someone who cannot bring himself to condemn terrorists who burned families alive, who violated women, who kidnapped babies.

And where is our Shomer? Where is the guardian who swore to stand watch?

The Arithmetic of Cowardice

You know exactly what Mamdani represents, Senator. He is the vanguard of a movement within your own party that has abandoned not just Israel, but basic moral clarity. When pressed about Hamas’s atrocities, he doesn’t stumble or stutter—he pivots with practiced ease, transforming butchers into freedom fighters, casting the victims as oppressors.

This isn’t happening in some distant state where you have no influence. This is New York. Your backyard. Your responsibility. Your silence.

We understand the cold political calculus you’re making. The progressive base Mamdani represents grows louder each day. They primary incumbents. They flood social media. They terrify established Democrats into submission. Standing against them requires courage—the very quality that separates leaders from politicians.

You’ve chosen to be a politician.

The Betrayal of Trust

Every day you remain silent, you send two messages with crystal clarity:

To the antisemites and terror apologists: You have nothing to fear. Even the highest-ranking Jewish official in America won’t challenge you.

To the Jewish community: When the mob turns against you, don’t look to Chuck Schumer for protection.

This is not about party politics or electoral strategy. This is about the normalization of hatred in the public square. When someone in your own state legislature cannot condemn the rape and murder of civilians—and you say nothing—you become complicit in that normalization.

The Guardian Who Fled His Post

A shomer doesn’t calculate the political cost before sounding the alarm. A shomer doesn’t check polling data before defending those under his protection. A shomer doesn’t abandon his post when the enemy approaches.

Yet here we are, watching our self-appointed guardian cower in silence, in fear, while those who would destroy us grow bolder by the day.

The Jewish community remembers, Senator. We remember who stood with us when standing with us was costly. We remember who spoke truth when lies were popular. And we will remember who chose silence when we needed a voice.

The Choice Before You

You still have time, but that window is closing rapidly. You can still be the Shomer you claimed to be. Condemn Mamdani’s moral bankruptcy. Challenge his whitewashing of terror. Stand between your community and those who would harm us.

Or continue your silence and confirm what many now suspect: that “Shomer” was never a sacred duty to you—just another campaign slogan, another clever bit of wordplay to win Jewish votes while the winds were favorable.

The enemies of the Jewish people are watching, Senator. So are we.

History will record whether Chuck Schumer was the guardian who stood firm or the watchman who fled when the wolves arrived. That history is being written now, in real-time, with every day you remain silent.

The Jewish people of New York are calling out to you: Where is our Shomer??

Will you answer, or will your epitaph read: “Here lies the guardian who guarded nothing”?

The choice is yours. The time is now. Your people are waiting.

I will be voting for Cuomo and so will thousands and thousands of Frum Yidden. But many many of us don’t base and judge a candidate on their stance with Israel. We look at a candidate what their view is on anything and espacial toward the Jews he will represent. It happens so to be that Mandami besides the fact that he loves Hamas and hates Israel is also a huge supporter of the Menivolim groups, hates business, hates Jews.Hates just about everything on the moral society should have.
