Mayor André Sayegh confirmed the father was Palestinian and related to NJ Assemblyman Al Abdelaziz. Fire Chief Alejandro Alicea called the loss “one of the largest we’ve seen in recent years,” noting the scale of the tragedy is highly unusual.
The fire, which erupted just before 10 p.m. on Emerson Street, reportedly began on the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor, fueled by strong winds. The home’s interior was heavily damaged, with windows shattered and structural elements exposed.
Three members of the fire department are related to the family. A fire captain and firefighter were hospitalized, and six residents were displaced due to the blaze.
Neighbors described the family as friendly and welcoming. “They were very kind people. Every time I drove by, they would wave,” said one neighbor.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities say there is no evidence of foul play
