NEW YORK CITY (VINnews) — FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker, a Jewish philanthropist and businessman, submitted his resignation Wednesday morning — just one day after anti-Israel Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City.

Tucker, 55, will step down from the role he assumed in August 2024 on Dec. 19, sources said. He plans to return to leading T&M, the private security firm he founded in 1999 and headed before joining Mayor Eric Adams’ administration.
The resignation came as Tucker was scheduled to travel to Israel later Wednesday to meet with a fire commissioner in the Jewish state.
Tucker’s reasons for stepping down were not immediately disclosed. The FDNY did not respond to requests for comment.
Tucker succeeded Laura Kavanagh, whose tenure as the department’s 34th commissioner was marked by controversy. Adams praised Tucker’s appointment last year, citing his “decades of experience in protecting public safety” and “strong personal ties to the FDNY.”
A former special assistant in the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Tucker has served as secretary of the FDNY Foundation and received honors from the New York Board of Rabbis and Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.
During his swearing-in ceremony, Tucker took the oath on a Tanach — the Hebrew Bible — held by his father, the same volume reportedly used at his bar mitzvah, according to the Jewish News Syndicate.
City Hall did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
