NEW YORK – A fierce political showdown is unfolding within the New York City Council as two Democratic lawmakers — one closely aligned with incoming socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the other an outspoken supporter of Israel — compete to become the next Council Speaker, the New York Post reports.

Brooklyn Councilwoman Crystal Hudson, a longtime progressive and visible Mamdani ally, is facing off against Julie Menin of Manhattan, a proud pro-Israel Democrat who has built a reputation as a steady moderate voice in city politics.
The rivalry came to a head this week at the annual SOMOS political retreat in Puerto Rico, where both contenders hosted competing events aimed at rallying undecided colleagues. With Mamdani’s upset victory in the mayoral race still reverberating across the city, the outcome of the speaker’s contest will determine whether his radical agenda faces resistance — or reinforcement — inside City Hall.
Hudson, who campaigned alongside Mamdani during the election, is viewed as a bridge between the new mayor’s base and the City Council’s progressive bloc. Supporters say she could usher in a “new era of cooperation” after years of tension between the council and outgoing Mayor Eric Adams.
Menin, however, has drawn strong backing from Jewish leaders and moderate Democrats wary of Mamdani’s hostility toward Israel and his past support for movements like BDS and “Globalize the Intifada.” Her allies argue that she represents the best hope for preventing City Hall from drifting further left.
“New Yorkers need a Speaker who will defend our communities, not one who rubber-stamps anti-Israel rhetoric,” said one councilmember who plans to back Menin. “Julie understands what’s at stake.”
According to the Post, the Brooklyn delegation may unite behind Hudson, though that alone might not be enough to secure the 26 votes required for victory. Menin is reportedly assembling a coalition that includes members from the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan — as well as powerful unions and civic groups alarmed by Mamdani’s ideological push.
The speaker’s race, typically an inside-baseball affair, has suddenly become a high-stakes referendum on how far the city will tilt under its first openly socialist mayor — and whether New York’s Jewish community will still have a strong voice in its leadership.

Again with the stupid upset victory lie, he was projected to win the entire time, he was ahead in the polls the entire time, an upset is when the unexpected candidate wins, which would have been if Cuomo won, a stunning upset is when the guy with no chance of winning wins which would have been if Sliwa won.
Missing from the article is that Crystal Hudson is the elected representative from Crown Heights and we got her in by less then a few hundred votes over her competition. So she owes her seat to the Lubavitchers and she was endorsed by the CHCC. So it’s not all doom and gloom.
im sure simcha felder will play a big role he is after all the elder there
the last thing we Jews need is a “pro-israel” voice in american politics! can we all please let our local governments focus on local governance?
