NEW YORK – Rama Duwaji, largely absent from the public spotlight during her husband Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, reveals a sharp political voice through her artwork. While she rarely makes public statements, her illustrations and animations consistently target Israel and U.S. backing of the Jewish state, offering a window into her perspectives for those willing to look.

Several pieces depict stacks of U.S. dollars labeled “Israeli war crimes,” highlighting what Duwaji portrays as the complicity of American funding in Israel’s military actions. Other works focus on Palestinian civilians, often children, portraying their suffering as the result of deliberate policies. One recent animation shows a Palestinian girl holding an empty pot, with the caption “Not a hunger crisis,” followed by others holding empty bowls, a critique of what she calls “deliberate starvation.”
Duwaji’s art has appeared in major outlets including The New Yorker, the BBC, and London’s Tate Modern, yet she has largely avoided public appearances or interviews during her husband’s campaign. Born in Texas and identifying as Syrian, Duwaji moved to New York in 2021 to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts. Despite her U.S. roots, she frequently frames her work through a lens critical of American foreign policy and Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
Zohran Mamdani has publicly praised his wife’s artistic talent, calling her “an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.” While Duwaji’s art is often described as socially conscious and politically engaged, her focus on Israeli military policies and U.S. support for them underscores a controversial pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel viewpoint.
As the city prepares for Mamdani to take office in January, Duwaji’s work adds another dimension to the political conversation surrounding the mayor-elect, offering insights into the worldview of one of New York’s soon-to-be most visible political families.
