The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred shortly after 2 p.m.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene with sirens, screeching tires, and a rapid burst of gunfire. A gray Acura at the scene was riddled with bullet holes, while a nearby black Mercedes — reportedly uninvolved — was struck during the exchange. The driver of that car, who had children inside, said they were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

“I just heard a bunch of sirens and then rapid gunshots,” said eyewitness Zach McDowell, who was nearby with his kids. “My son asked, ‘Daddy, what’s that sound?’ I told him, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll get out of here.’”

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or condition, and it remains unclear what led to the chase. State police have referred all questions to the Attorney General’s Office, which has not yet provided additional details.
