Councilmember Invites Netanyahu to NYC to Spite Mamdani Amid Arrest Threats

BROOKLYN – On Monday, New York City Councilmember Inna Vernikov sent a formal letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, inviting him to visit New York City on the day Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to be sworn in as Mayor of New York City. Vernikov wrote in her letter that the invitation was intended to spite Mamdani politically.

The move comes amid tensions: during his campaign, Mamdani repeatedly said he would seek to have Netanyahu arrested if he attempted a visit to New York, citing his opposition to the Prime Minister’s policies. While largely symbolic, the threat has made the upcoming swearing-in a focal point of political drama.

Vernikov, a vocal supporter of Israel and critic of Mamdani’s progressive politics, said the timing of the invitation was intentional. “This is about sending a message,” she wrote in her letter.

Arresting Netanyahu would violate two federal laws (he has diplomatic immunity, and federal law prohibits any cooperation with the ICC). I foresee lawsuits on the horizon.
