NEW YORK – Residents of Washington Heights are raising concerns after a man was forcibly removed from his car by masked federal agents and placed into an unmarked black SUV during what appeared to be an immigration enforcement action.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency confirmed the man, identified as Alpha Amadou Diallo from Guinea, had a removal order issued in February 2024. ICE stated Diallo had entered the U.S. illegally near Del Rio, Texas, and that the agency followed due process in his arrest.
Video captured Wednesday morning shows agents wearing Homeland Security Investigation gear pulling Diallo from his vehicle near West 157th Street and Broadway. Witnesses reported that he appeared to be an Uber driver and screamed as he was loaded into the SUV.
Peter Green, who filmed the footage, described the scene as unsettling. “I’ve seen similar operations in war zones,” he said. “It’s not something you expect on the streets of New York.”
Local Council Member Shaun Abreu, who visited the scene, expressed concern about the manner of the arrest and said advocates are still gathering information about Diallo.
ICE spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin defended the operation, noting that agents wore masks for protection against potential threats and clearly identified themselves as law enforcement.
