Atickul Islam, 29, who joined the NYPD in 2018 and was promoted to sergeant in 2023, also goes by the name James W. Anderson. Authorities say he contacted the victim on March 29, claiming to be the director of ICE’s New York field office, and demanded the family report to an ICE facility by April 15. The incident reportedly occurred in Queens.
Islam works at Police Service Area 3, which serves 22 New York City Housing Authority developments across the 79th, 81st, 84th, 88th, and 90th precincts.
Islam is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in Brooklyn Federal Court on a single charge of falsely impersonating a federal officer. Prosecutors are not expected to contest his release on bond.
