NEW YORK – For the benefit of the doubt, let’s begin with a simple fact: Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor. Whether one supported him or not, he will soon be sitting in City Hall. And for the sake of the city, we all need to give him a chance to lead.

But Wednesday night made that chance a lot harder to justify.
A protest was staged in front of a synagogue, led by a Holocaust survivor — the esteemed Rabbi Arthur Schneier. Demonstrators held signs that were nothing short of incendiary. For a mayor-elect who proudly declared during his victory speech that he would “fight antisemitism” and “protect Jewish New Yorkers,” this should have been the clearest test imaginable.
The instinctive response — the only responsible response — should have been for Mamdani to walk out in front of cameras himself and condemn it forcefully, unequivocally, unmistakably.
He didn’t.
Instead, he sent his spokesperson. Or at least, that’s what we’re told. No one even knows if he actually sent her or if it was a last-minute attempt to paper over the silence. What we do know is that the statement was light, perfunctory, and nowhere near the level of outrage the situation demanded. Not even his social media account carries a statement on this.
As the Jewish Talmud teaches, “One who can protest and does not is, in a sense, agreeing.” Silence in the face of injustice is, effectively, complicity.
Mr. Mayor-elect, the Jews of New York are petrified. Not nervous — petrified. They have raised concerns to the highest heavens about your worldview, your associations, and your philosophy of governing. You have had every opportunity to calm those fears. You still do.
But when a raging protest targets a Jewish house of worship, you are nowhere to be found? Imagine — truly imagine — if a protest like this took place outside a Muslim mosque, blocking entry or exit, shouting inflammatory slogans. There is no doubt you would have been standing at that very doorway personally, condemning it with maximum volume.
Yet Wednesday night, when the target was Jewish, you stayed silent.
Mr. Mayor-elect, New York deserves better. The Jewish community deserves far better. Leadership means showing up — especially when it’s uncomfortable. Especially when it’s politically inconvenient. Especially when it counts.
If this is the preview of your administration, the fear we’re hearing across this city is not only understandable — it’s justified.
It’s time for you to step forward, not hide behind spokespeople.
New Yorkers are watching. Jewish New Yorkers are praying. And the ball is in your court.

i read your editorial and it’s pathetic, nebach type. it ends with “the ball is in your court.” Mamdani was elected to lead against us, he was elected to make NYC for allah. What is there not clear? Leaving is not an option for many. Instead of begging him to be “fair”, resist him in any lawful way. For example, in this case, did this protest have a permit? if so, who gave it? ask Adams, he talks alot. If there was not permit, why didn’t Jessica Tisch arrest them all? Next, hire investigators to doxx those people, find who organized, who paid, make this info public. Finally, mamdani like to use “international law”. Any lawyers reading this? There is no such thing, it’s not enforceable. To enforce any law one needs an army, or as we say sovereignty. There is no world government and there is no world law. If instead of following the laws of new york, warn him, that he can be arrested!
What do you expect from a Terrorist sympathizer, who hate Jews so much they are celebrating death of their own children in order to kill Jews
This has been going on for 2 years and the entire democrat party practically supports it. Hochul condemned it in a tweet she also allows it to happen
NYC mosques are used to promote Hamas and terror against JEws and Israel; isn’t THAT in violation of international law (to say nothing of State and Federal Law)? Is Mamdani saying anything about that? No, of course not. He SUPPORTS terror against Jews.
Get out of NYC.
The golden days are over.
Go to NJ, FL or EY. But get out.
What’s so shocking ?
“for the benefit of the doubt”?! which “doubt” is that? he WAS elected mayor, and 30% of nyc jews voted FOR him. he didn’t hide his views before the election, and he certainly has no reason to hide them now. you’re lucky he even sent a representative to pretend to care about a shul, because i doubt he’ll even make the effort next time. and there will be a next time.
Uhh, I don’t think he reads this.
Adhere to financial influence: FOLLOW THE MONEY. Mamadani is purportedly a puppet controlled by the Muslim Arab financial interests to which Trump is allegedly addicted. The Jewish community does not possess comparable wealth. The only genuine expression for a Jew is the truth. Jewish truth aligns with Jewish law, and wherever a Jew resides, the safety of Jewish communities is of utmost importance!
Why are you expecting him to do anything? It’s better that he be shown for the extremist that he is. He doesn’t “need a chance.” Jews just need to see the writing on the wall, okay? Could it really be clearer? I hope not.
In the 1930’s & 1940’s the question to Flee or Stay and the correct guidance of the Rabbonim and Admorim (Daas Torah was not in vogue yet) was a mixed bag. Let’s us pray that this time the American Yidden make a timely and correct decision.
The sign bbeing held in the photo echo’s the true sentiments of NYC mayor elect Momzermani. The 30% of the JINO’s who voted for this present day hitler Y’MS deserve what is coming to them.NYC instead of being a center of Jewish life will soon become a center of hatred & blatant anti-semitism. Attacks on Yidden will become a daily occurence & the NYC government will turn a blind eye. I hope and pray that HaShem will send HaMalacha Movis to visit this POS soon, before NYC becomes Juden Rein. Who knows this mayor may even try to establish ghettos.
Joseph, what a ridiculous way in which to begin your article.
All true, but where was the mayor himself, Adam’s, yes Adam’s, remember him….
Where are the Gedoilim and the Askanim? Can they tell us what to do?
The curse of Ishmael. The world will be subjugated to them until the arrival of mashiach. Until then they control everything
Who needs this stupid נפש בנפש idiocy here let them keep their trash elsewhere
