Ben Shapiro: Social Media Algorithms ‘Destroying America,’ Heavy X Use May Leave Users ‘Less Informed’

NEW YORK (VINnews) — Daily Wire co-founder and conservative commentator Ben Shapiro issued a stark warning about the impact of social media algorithms, declaring that they are “destroying America” and suggesting that prolonged time spent on X (formerly Twitter) could actually make users less informed and more detached from reality.

Shapiro argued that the platform’s engagement-driven algorithms prioritize outrage and polarization over substantive discourse.

“The algorithms are destroying America,” Shapiro said. “The more time you’re spending on X… maybe the less informed you are and also the more out of touch with reality you are.”

The remark comes as X, under the ownership of Elon Musk, has positioned itself as a free-speech alternative to more heavily moderated platforms. Yet Shapiro’s critique echoes concerns raised by observers across the political spectrum that algorithmically curated feeds often trap users in echo chambers and reward inflammatory content.

Shapiro, a prolific X user with over 6 million followers, has himself benefited from the platform’s reach while frequently criticizing the broader effects of social media on public discourse and mental health.
