JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Israel Defense Forces announced that troops thwarted an attempt to smuggle firearms from Jordan into Israel using a commercial drone.

The incident occurred overnight Wednesday–Thursday when the Israeli Air Force’s air traffic control array detected the drone crossing the border. Ground forces from the Yoav Regional Brigade were dispatched to the area and located the unmanned aircraft.
According to an IDF statement, the drone was carrying nine handguns and multiple ammunition magazines. The weapons were seized and transferred to Israel Police for further investigation.
No arrests were reported in connection with the incident, and the IDF did not specify the intended destination of the smuggled arms.
Cross-border weapons smuggling attempts from Jordan have increased in recent months, military officials say, with drones emerging as a new tactic employed by smugglers.
