NEW YORK — Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said he plans to move into Gracie Mansion after his inauguration, ending speculation about whether he would continue living in his rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria.

Mamdani confirmed the decision in a post on X, citing family safety and the practical demands of the job. The move marks a shift from his campaign persona as a Queens tenant, though he said his connection to the borough remains central to his identity.

“My heart will always be in Astoria,” Mamdani wrote, adding that he intends to govern with the same focus on affordability and working-class concerns that defined his campaign.

The announcement followed reports that security officials recommended the relocation due to the volume of protests surrounding his election.

Mamdani is set to be sworn in on Jan. 1.
