JERUSALEM — New footage circulating on social media shows Israel’s incoming Mossad chief, Maj. Gen. Roman Gofman, rushing into battle during the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks with only his personal weapon, making him the most senior IDF officer to directly engage the terrorists that day.

The video captures Gofman at the Sha’ar HaNegev Junction near the Gaza border, where he is seen running toward a small police force under fire. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was later hospitalized.

Gofman, a resident of Ashdod, headed south immediately after learning of the mass infiltration. A United Hatzalah ambulance driver told Israel Hayom he evacuated an injured soldier who identified himself as “Roman,” the commander of the Tze’elim base, and kept him conscious throughout the ride.
Gofman currently serves as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military secretary. He is set to replace Mossad Director David Barnea when Barnea’s five-year term ends in June.
In announcing the appointment, Netanyahu praised Gofman’s “exceptional professional abilities” and his coordination with Israel’s intelligence community across the war’s seven operational theaters, calling him “the most suitable and deserving candidate.”
Israel has shared new footage from October 7, showing Mossad's incoming chief, unarmored and armed only with his personal weapon, fighting Hamas terrorists.
