WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump ignited a massive firestorm across social media Monday after posting a message suggesting actor-director Rob Reiner’s death was linked to anger he allegedly provoked through his opposition to the president — drawing sharp criticism from prominent conservative pundits, including many who are among Trump’s most loyal MAGA supporters.

Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday at their Los Angeles home in what authorities are investigating as an apparent homicide. Police said the couple suffered stab wounds. Their son, Nick Reiner, was taken into custody as part of the investigation. No motive has been announced.
As the investigation was still unfolding, Trump posted a message on his social media platform that blended a brief expression of sympathy with harsh personal attacks on Reiner, attributing the tragedy — without evidence — to what he called the filmmaker’s “incurable affliction” with “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The post triggered an immediate and widespread backlash online, particularly among conservative commentators who are typically aligned with Trump and rarely break with him publicly. Throughout the day, influential right-leaning pundits and activists flooded social media with criticism, calling the remarks inappropriate, damaging, and unworthy of a president.
I’m extremely disappointed with President Donald Trump’s response to the deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner.

Reiner was among Hollywood’s most outspoken liberal activists, frequently raising money for Democratic candidates and using his platform to criticize Trump. He repeatedly questioned Trump’s fitness for office, once calling him “mentally unfit” and uniquely dangerous to American democracy.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment on whether Trump would amend or remove the post. Accounts affiliated with the administration continued to share it throughout the day.
Jenna Ellis, a former Trump attorney, criticized the post as a “double standard,” pointing out that Trump himself has survived two assassination attempts.
“The Right condemned politicizing the death of Charlie Kirk,” Ellis wrote, referring to the conservative activist killed earlier this year. “This response is wrong and should be condemned by anyone with basic decency.”
This tweet is so disappointing. And so unnecessary. It’s comments like this that take away from the countless great things @realDonaldTrump does for America. pic.twitter.com/X27FzRenXV

A man and his wife were murdered last night. This is NOT the appropriate response.
The Right uniformly condemned political and celebratory responses to Charlie Kirk’s death. This is a horrible example from Trump (and surprising considering the two attempts on his own life) and… https://t.co/U2P1aWc1Tn

This statement is wrong.
Regardless of one’s political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands of their own son. It’s a horrible tragedy that should engender sympathy and compassion from everyone in our country, period. https://t.co/WjZ6kOoomR

This is a dreadful thing to say about a man who just got murdered by his troubled son.
Delete it, Mr President @realDonaldTrump . pic.twitter.com/LP9cTIPNiQ— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) December 15, 2025
I voted for him 3x’s, but there are days when I just shake my head. Today is one of those days. pic.twitter.com/HN3TxXyH5t

Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered. I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it. pic.twitter.com/j3dvzRxLQJ

What happened last night to Rob Reiner and his wife was a savage butchering of 2 human lives. I don’t care what their politics were or how they felt about Trump, no law abiding human deserves this. We should pray for + send condolences to his loved ones and NOT make it political. https://t.co/WK99n8zVWF

This is a disgusting post by @realDonaldTrump about the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. Truly appalling that he thinks like this. This is just as bad as the horrible posts about Charlie Kirk's murder. pic.twitter.com/XjSqwDX2KU

This is so SAD to see from President Trump. This is NOT just, “Trump being Trump.” It’s Trump being classless. pic.twitter.com/iEE4M4BVOS

I fully understand that Mr. Reiner was unhinged in his delusional hatred of POTUS but I think that it might have been best to simply say "RIP" or nothing at all. And believe me, I'm all for the honey badger mindset. https://t.co/Y3VGGHEriv

Middos Alert!
Show a little decency please.
No excuse for such vile comments for such a tragedy. Trump appears to suffering from “Reverse Trump Derangement Syndrome” if anyone makes a comment with which Trump disagrees, he goes bananas. ReverseTDS!
Shoteh aino busha!
Us frum Jews support Trump bec of Israel. And no that’s not unfortunate. That’s what caring about our brothers lives mean. No we won’t have to answer after 120, Bec this is the value of saving lives. Does this mean that we agree with Trumps vulgar personality ? No . But saving Jewish lives will and should come first
The only stupid part of his rant was relating the murder to TDS. But his calling Gov Walz “retarded” was similarly stupid (albeit more accurate), as well as many other idiotic remarks he’s made in his 5 years as president (remember his commentary about Kim Jong Un?). He often speaks stupidly, but he is certainly not a stupid man. In this instance, there was no reason for him to offer praise for a man that publicly despised and insulted him constantly, and it was ok for him to denigrate him even before rigor mortis sets in (he doesn’t have to adhere to the “Acharei Mos Kedoshim” maxim we Jews usually follow), but the connection to TDS is just stupid.
Keeping in mind that Reiner regularly and consistently smeared Trump as a Nazi fascist corrupt dictator, and how the Left quietly applauded Trump’s near assassination and lamented the inaccurate aim of the Trump assassin, and how after Kirk’s murder many, many normie Democrats celebrated, Trump’s reaction is understandable. The blowback to it is typical: Leftists bulldoze the guardrails of decency, and then complain when those guardrails are not there to protect them.
Might be a tacky statement,
but he is absolutely right.
