Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, 22, was wounded while on patrol at the Chanukah by the Sea event on Dec. 14. Police said Hibbert was shot twice as he moved to confront the attackers, Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram.
Hibbert underwent several operations and spent time in intensive care. Doctors later determined that his injuries caused permanent vision loss in one eye.
In a statement released Tuesday, the family said Hibbert’s return home marked a major milestone in his recovery.
“Having Jack home, especially during the holiday period, means everything to us,” the family said, expressing gratitude for the support from the public, fellow officers and emergency personnel. They also praised hospital staff for what they described as extraordinary care.
The family asked for privacy as Hibbert continues to heal.
Hibbert had joined NSW Police just months before the attack.
Another officer injured in the shooting, Scott Dyson, has emerged from a medically induced coma after undergoing repeated surgeries, ABC News Australia reported. His family said his condition remains serious but stable.
“There is still a long road ahead, but waking up is a positive step,” the family said in a statement, thanking medical teams and the public for their support while requesting privacy.
Authorities said 15 people were killed and about 40 others wounded in the attack. Naveed Akram, 24, was treated in hospital under police guard for roughly a week before being transferred to a correctional facility, police said.
