LONDON — Police in southwest England have decided not to pursue charges over controversial chants directed at Israel’s military during a Glastonbury Festival performance by the punk rap duo Bob Vylan, saying the remarks did not cross the legal threshold for criminal prosecution.

According to Reuters, Avon and Somerset Police said Tuesday that a review of the evidence, conducted in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, found no basis for further action.
The investigation focused on statements made onstage by lead singer Bobby Vylan during the band’s June appearance, when he led the crowd in chants calling for violence against the Israel Defense Forces.

Police said investigators examined the intent of the comments, their broader context, relevant legal precedents and free speech protections before closing the case. Authorities added that the available evidence did not support a reasonable likelihood of securing a conviction.
As part of the inquiry, officers interviewed a man in his mid-30s and reached out to roughly 200 members of the public, the force said.
The performance drew sharp criticism across the political spectrum, including condemnation from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Israel’s embassy in London. Britain’s public broadcaster, the BBC, also faced backlash for allowing a live broadcast of the set to continue.
Police said they engaged with Jewish community groups throughout the investigation and acknowledged that the incident provoked widespread public anger, underscoring the impact that public speech can have even when it falls short of criminal conduct.
