The incident unfolded around noon near Northgate Way, where the lieutenant stopped to check on a pedestrian seen running across the freeway. Police said the suspect pushed the trooper to the ground, climbed into the marked patrol car and drove off.
Video posted on social media shows the suspect standing in the middle of I-5 traffic shortly before the theft. Other footage appears to show the suspect opening the patrol car door, pulling the trooper from the vehicle and fleeing in it.
The Washington State Patrol requested assistance, and the Seattle Police Department joined the pursuit, officials said. The chase continued north before ending on southbound I-5 in Lynnwood, where officers used a PIT maneuver to stop the stolen patrol car.
The suspect was arrested at the scene. Authorities said no serious injuries were reported. Left and HOV lanes were temporarily blocked during the incident but later reopened.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are expected to be reviewed.
